Adopt A Family During Holidays

There are 925 million undernourished people in the world today. That means one in seven people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active lifestyle. Hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to the health worldwide.

What do you do when your stomach growls? I mean, after you get that embarrassed grin off your face and turn to see if anyone else heard it. Undoubtedly, you do what I do - - you go get something to eat. What would you do, however, if there was nothing to get? Worst yet, what would you do if your child's stomach growled, and there was nothing to get for them to eat?

Joe Eriquez and Heart for the City has shared the burden for those parents who have to listen to the growling of their children's stomach and can't do anything about it, especially on holidays. They have created the Heart For The City 4 H Program: Holiday Help for Hungry Homes, that prepares nutritious meal on major holidays to identified poor AZ families in Glendale Arizona. The Holiday Help for Hungry Homes in a way adopt a family during the holiday.

A Ministry House to Reach Inner City Kids

Remember when you were young and you had a bad day? You couldn't wait to get home and the safe confines of the four walls that surrounded you! That's a feeling that we should all have, but Joe Eriquez of Heart for the City knows a lot of kids that never get to experience that feeling. That's why he diligently sought a house that he could make safe for the youth of Glendale, Arizona. That's why he now diligently seeks YOUR help in making that house all that it can be.

"We have a vision," Joe explained, "where this house will not only be a center for socializing, but, and more importantly, a place where learning can take place. Our greatest need in this realm is computers. With an extensive computer lab we can help kids with their homework, and help them go online and search for Grants so they can realize their dream of getting a higher education. We can give them an opportunity to learn, and improve, their computer skills - - a marketable skill that is quickly becoming a requirement when seeking gainful employment."

As well a center for education, Joe envisions the house becoming the center for basic needs, where the community can come for basic survival needs. Due to its location in the community it is an ideal site for a Food Bank, as well as a Distribution Center for clothes and even house wares and furniture. In an area where 52% of the families are below the poverty level and the unemployment rate is 39%, it is apparent that the "Ministry House" will have more than ample opportunity to Minister!

What he needs the most, however, is volunteers. People who will dedicate themselves to being trained to minister to young people and train them - - to be part of the 21st Century, to improve family life for their children, and to become part of the Kingdom of God! Mission Statement

Heart for the City is a non-profit organization. HFTC is committed to the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of the children and poor families of the inner-city communities. Special emphasis is placed on low-income neighborhoods of Glendale by creating innovative solutions to the difficult social problems that poor families face daily.

Mission Overview

For 30 years the message of hope has gone out to the at risk youth and their families of urban Glendale through Young Life and Heart for the City. Our mission is holistic among the at risk youth and their families. Our plan is to increase community development through raising indigenous leaders.

Need for a new kind of leadership in the inner-cities

There is a need for a new kind of leadership in the inner cities - a need for men and women who are teaching and demonstrating by example the kind of character and values that bring purpose to life and positive direction to children, teens and families.

The need for role models

Inner-city children, teens and families need role models from their own ethnic background, who have experienced similar situations, and who can give them hope, motivation, and courage to live for something above and beyond the lure of a life of crime or dependency. The ethnic urban leader who will have the greatest positive influence in his/her own community is the person who is a healthy role model - both morally and spiritually - and who will "roll up his/her sleeves" and become personally involved in the lives of those around them.

This vision is about building and rebuilding lives. In order for true and lasting change to occur in our communities, we must begin to rebuild positive value systems by assisting individuals and families in regaining a purpose in life. Solving problems in our communities must begin with the individual. Sound character, constructive attitudes, and traditional value systems need to be established one by one. Mentoring teens and Adopt A Family program are important parts of this ministry to AZ poor families.

Adopt a Family

Heart for the City visioned to enhance and develop personal, family and business relationships. To strengthen the spiritual foundation upon which men and women can build as they make a positive impact in their communities. Among the positive programs is the "Adopt a Family" program which happens during Thanksgiving and Christmas. The program aims to bring food to the table of the AZ poor families on this festivities.
